Avoid a Fire in Your Fargo-Moorhead Home

8/11/2022 (Permalink)

House going up in flames Take precautions to avoid a house fire!

Each year fires affect around 375,000 homes a year. House fires can be devastating and will cause over 7 billion dollars in damages each year.

Take some time to review these important safety measures to ensure that you are reducing your risk of experiencing a house fire:

  •       Avoid smoking while laying down. Surprisingly enough, people fall asleep while smoking and it is continuously a leading cause of fire related deaths.
  • Unplug appliances that are not in use. Some appliances have automatic features that will keep the appliance on at all times so they can be turned on right away. These appliances should always be unplugged when not in use!
  •  Make sure that nothing is laying on top of power strips.
  • Always unplug hair dryers, curling irons, and flat irons. Make sure these hair tools are always placed on a flat, hard surface. Soft surfaces or cloth can catch fire.
  • Make sure portable heaters are 3 feet away from any object. Portable heaters are the second leading cause of house fires.
  • When cooking food, do not leave the stovetop or oven unattended. Make sure to keep all pot and pan handles facing towards the wall and out of reach from children.
  • Use baking soda to extinguish grease fires, as water will make them spread.
  • Keep batteries in your smoke detectors and test them frequently.

Avoid an Office Fire at Your Local Business

7/7/2022 (Permalink)

Fire in an office Have a safety plan - Keep your employees safe!

If you or someone you know has gone through fire damage, you know how devastating it can be. Years of memories, paperwork, and investments can be gone in a flash. Nobody plans on having fire damage. Fortunately, there are a few things we can do to prevent it. Many times an office fire will start in the electrical or utility room. In an effort to mitigate the effect of electrical or utility fire, there are systems in place such as a sprinkler system, room temperature trigger alert system, and smoke alarms.

It is very important to conduct annual tests on these systems to ensure they are working in case of an emergency. Make sure that your company has set dates to check on these systems.

What to do if a fire does happen

If you have an office fire, despite the precautions you may have taken, you are most likely left with a charred mess, along with the debris left from extinguishing the fire. This can leave you wishing that this never even happened. Lucky for you, our job is to make it “Like it never even happened.” We are the experts in fire restoration and will get your space looking back to normal in no time.

Our team is IICRC certified and trained to handle all fire restoration projects, big or small. Leave it to the experts.

Can Smoke Odor Be Removed From a Home in Briarwood?

6/7/2022 (Permalink)

A first responder wears a breathing apparatus to fight a fire in a smoke-filled building. We restore fire damage 24-hours a day in Cass County.

Our local team in Fargo uses a variety of smoke removal equipment to remove smoke residue and odor from homes and businesses. Every fire event varies depending on what is burnt in the fire.

Air Scrubber or Filter

  • Heating, ventilation, air conditioning system (HVAC) air scrubber, or a high-efficiency particulate air filter (HEPA) air purifier can capture larger smoke molecules. There will still be some residual odor from smaller molecules or surface residues.

Ozone Generator

  • An ozone generator is a fast and highly effective smoke odor restoration method. These machines emit ozone, which follows the same paths through the air as smoke and oxidizes any residual traces in the air or on surfaces.

Thermal Fogging

  • Thermal fogging is an intensive treatment involving fogging machines. After residents evacuate, smoke cleaning professionals fill a structure with petroleum distillates that neutralize odors and ventilate the area.

Hydroxyl Generator

  • A hydroxyl generator is a slower and gentler alternative to ozone. These machines rely on ultraviolet light to generate hydroxyl radicals that eliminate smoke odors. It will take about three to five days of continuous operation to achieve the same results as a single ozone treatment.

Vapor Modification

  • Vapor modification is another odor elimination method that relies on aromatic compounds and a blower or fan to neutralize smoke odor

Signs of Water Leaking in My Briarwood Home?

5/4/2022 (Permalink)

Bulging and cracking paint reveal hidden water damage. We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Cass County.

Do you know how to tell if your home has hidden water damage? Our local team in Fargo restores all kinds of water damage in Briarwood, and we use advanced technology and techniques to locate and identify the source of hidden water damage.

After a storm or when the snowmelt begins is an excellent time to inspect your roofing system and attic space for signs of water intrusion. Ice dam damage may not become visible until the snow melts. Two easy ways to determine where the source of the water is coming from are:

  1. If the water damage is isolated to the top floor, it is probably roof damage
  2. Water damage on interior floors could be coming from leaking pipes running between two floors or coming from an upstairs bathroom

Here are some of the “low-tech” signs that you may have water damage in your ceiling:

  • Yellow or brown spots in the ceiling paint
  • Peeling, cracking, or bubbling paint and surfaces on the ceiling or walls
  • Strong mildew or mold odor
  • Dark, round stains on the ceiling
  • Bulging or sagging ceiling
  • Bulging or stained drywall
  • Wetness or dampness on the ceiling
  • Visibly seeing water dripping through the ceiling or walls

Snow Squall Warning Issued for downtown Fargo?

4/19/2022 (Permalink)

Snow and freezing ice blow across a roadway during a snow squall. We restore storm damage 24-hours a day in Cass County.

Newswriter Barry Amundson reported on a snow squall that moved into downtown Fargo from the northwest on March 10. A snow squall could be described as a fast-moving blizzard. “Snow Squall” is a new term first issued in 2018 by the National Weather Service (NWS).

  • It is a polygon warning, generally 30-60 minutes in duration, that is issued similar to severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings
  • A snow squall is an intense, short-lived burst of heavy snowfall that leads to a quick reduction in visibilities and is often accompanied by gusty winds
  • Sudden whiteout conditions and slick roadways can lead to high-speed accidents with large pileups that result in injuries and fatalities
  • This new warning aims to bring better situational awareness to drivers and mitigate impacts related to these squalls
  • If a snow squall warning is issued in your area, avoid or delay motor travel until the squall passes through your location.

Flash Freeze

Snow squalls are especially dangerous because they are accompanied by a flash freeze that causes a rapid change in road conditions, leading to multiple accidents.

Fire Prevention Safety Tips for Fargo Children and Families?

4/13/2022 (Permalink)

Young people view a large fire from a distance. We restore fire damage 24-hours a day in Cass County.

Children are naturally curious about fire, so they need to learn fire safety rules early. Our local team in Fargo restores fire damage throughout the year in Fargo. Here are some fire safety tips for families and children from the  National Fire Protection Association:

  • Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children, up high, preferably in a locked cabinet
  • Closely supervise children, making sure that they are kept away from other fire sources, including lit candles, cigarettes, bonfires, and stoves
  • Explain that fire moves very fast and can hurt as soon as it touches them. Tell them that this is why matches and lighters are tools for adults only.
  • Teach young children never to touch matches or lighters. They must tell a grown-up when matches or lighters are found.
  • Establish clear rules and consequences about unsupervised and unauthorized uses of fire
  • Be a good example! Always use fire sources — matches, lighters, candles, fireplaces, and campfires — in a safe manner. Never treat them as toys, or children may imitate you.
  • Talk with children about what their friends or other children are doing with fire. What do they see online in video games, TV, movies, and social media? Teach them specific ways to resist the peer pressure to misuse fire.
  • Give praise for showing respect and age-appropriate responsible behavior toward fire

A blizzard creates zero visibility conditions. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Cass County.

North Dakota had over six blizzard warnings this past winter! Typically the state gets between three and four. The February 18 blizzard closed down Interstate 29 between Fargo and the Canadian border and brought sixty mile-per-hour winds and zero visibility conditions. Our local team in Fargo responded to many storm damage emergency calls, many due to wind damage.

Here are terms used by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to define hazardous weather:

Snowmelt Flooding in Fargo?

The view of an ice jam along the Red River during the spring flood of 2011. We respond to commercial property damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Cass County.

When your business experiences water intrusion from snowmelt, SERVPRO® of Fargo’s technicians will arrive quickly to begin the cleanup and restoration process immediately. We respond to water damage emergencies of all kinds every year.

According to the North Dakota State University Geosciences Department (NDSU), the Red River has passed into flood stage at least once per year. The flooding has been minimal for most years, but several floods have been devastating. In a report from NDSU, the Red River is prone to flooding because:

  1. The Red River flows northward, and its waters increase due to runoff from both the South and North portions of the valley
  2. Ice jams form when ice from the southern valley meets the freshly broken ice in the central and northern valley, causing ice concentrations that build and dam the water flow.
  3. The Red River is a young river of about 9300 hundred years old in geologic time, and this “young river” has not had time to carve a significant valley yet.
  4. The decrease in the downslope of the river averages five inches per mile around Fargo-Halstad, and the downslope of the Drayton-Pembina is only 1.5 inches per mile. During floods, the lack of slope causes the water to pool.

Evaluated on categories such as growth, financial strength and stability, and brand power, SERVPRO was named the #8 overall franchise system, and #1 in the cleaning and restoration industry for the 19th consecutive year.

“SERVPRO is built on the foundation of outstanding customer service, industry-leading training and the success of following a proven system,” said SERVPRO CEO Rick Isaacson. “On behalf of the more than 1,900 SERVPRO franchises across the U.S. and Canada, we are honored by this recognition.

“The SERVPRO brand and its franchisees share a strong partnership, working together to set and achieve goals which have allowed us to grow each year for more than half a century despite the challenges many businesses have faced, especially over the past 18-24 months.”

“The past year has been one of the most challenging for businesses in recent memory, which made putting together our 43rd annual Franchise 500 list more enlightening than ever,” said Entrepreneur Editor in Chief Jason Feifer. “The companies named to this year’s list showed us how being resilient, supportive and nimble can help navigate extraordinary challenges and also underscore the grit and innovation that define entrepreneurship.”

SERVPRO franchise owners pride themselves on being “ready for whatever happens,” Isaacson said, which helped the company jump two spots from its #10 ranking in 2021.

“Our franchisees have a ‘never say no’ mentality, working together with other owners to make sure we are able to satisfy all of our customers’ and clients’ cleanup, remediation and restoration needs, which allows us to ‘Keep it Green,’ as we like to say.

“We pride ourselves on rushing in when others are running out – whether that is in response to a natural disaster such as a hurricane, flood or tornado; cleaning up after a home or business water or fire loss; or helping clean and sanitize spaces from unseen threats like COVID-19. Maintaining our position for nearly 20 years as the best franchise in our category on the Entrepreneur Franchise 500 list validates our long-standing strategy for growing our brand: invest in franchisee training and support and commit resources to continually improving our infrastructure.”

A picture of the historic Fargo Theatre in downtown Fargo, North Dakota, with snow. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Cass County.

Do you know that fresh snow of more than four feet can cause your roof to fail? When you need help with a storm damage emergency, SERVPRO® of Fargo is Here to Help. ® Here is some information from the Insurance Institute of Business and Home Safety to help you determine how much the snow on your roof weighs:

Fresh snow: Ten to twelve inches of new snow equals one inch of water or about five pounds per square foot of roof space, so you could have up to four feet of new snow before the roof becomes stressed.

Packed snow: Three to five inches of old snow is equal to one inch of water, or about five pounds per square foot of roof space, so anything more than two feet of old snow could be too much for your roof to handle.

  • Total accumulated weight:Two feet of old snow and two feet of new snow could weigh as much as sixty pounds per square foot of roof space, which is beyond most roofs’ typical snow load capacity.

West Fargo Needs to Know!

More fires happen in December, January, and February than at any other time of the year. SERVPRO® of Fargo offers these heating equipment safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional
  • Never use your oven to heat your home
  • Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters, or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions
  • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed
  • Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel-burning space heaters
  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  • Install wood-burning stoves following the manufacturer’s instructions or have a professional do the installation. All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Damaged Rain Gutters in Fargo?

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

A home with rain gutters is featured. We restore storm damage 24-hours a day in Cass County.

When rain gutters are installed incorrectly, they can cause severe structural damage.  Routine inspection and maintenance can help you avoid costly water damage repairs. SERVPRO® of Fargo shares these tips from home expert Bob Villa for determining if your rain gutters are sound:

Inspect your rain gutters for visible signs of cracking. Use binoculars to inspect for smaller cracks. If you see extensive cracking, replacement is required.

Inspect gutter seams for damage where two horizontal sections meet.

Inspect your home’s paint job. If there is evidence of paint peeling, it may point to rain gutter failure. Check the section of the rain gutter closest to the paint damage for leaks. If there are more than a couple of leaks, you may want to replace the rain gutters.

Inspect your home’s exterior wood elements for rotting windowsills or door jambs. You may have clogged rain gutters or inadequate storm drainage.

Inspect the exterior of the home for mildew damage. If there is moisture accumulating around or near the foundation, mildew can grow. This is a sign your rain gutters are not working properly.

Cigarette Causes Fire in Fargo Apartment Building?

10/4/2021 (Permalink)

A lit cigarette is shown. We restore fire damage for Cass County homes and businesses.

A discarded cigarette was identified as the cause of an apartment fire that happened this June. SERVPRO® of Fargo offers these smoking and home fire safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

Smoking Safety

·      If you smoke, use only fire-safe cigarettes

·      If you smoke, smoke outside. Most deaths result from fires that started in living rooms, family rooms and dens or in bedrooms.

·      Keep cigarettes, lighters, matches, and other smoking materials up high out of the reach of children, in a locked cabinet

Put It Out

·      Use a deep, sturdy ashtray. Place it away from anything that can burn.

·      Do not discard cigarettes in vegetation such as mulch, potted plants or landscaping, peat moss, dried grasses, leaves or other things that could ignite easily

·      Before you throw away butts and ashes, make sure they are out, and dousing in water or sand is the best way to do that

Smoking and Medical Oxygen

Never smoke and never allow anyone to smoke where medical oxygen is used. Medical oxygen can cause materials to ignite more easily and make fires burn at a faster rate than normal. It can make an existing fire burn faster and hotter.

How Many Air Movers Does It Take to Mitigate a Large Commercial Building?

9/28/2021 (Permalink)

Air movers stacked up ready to go to a commercial job site Nearly all of our air movers were used to help mitigate a large commercial water loss

When we get a call about a large commercial building having MAJOR water damage, we know what to do to make it “Like it never even happened.” First, we send a large crew to the building to remove the standing water and document all of the damage that had occurred in the building. After we clean up everything, it is time for our air movers to work their magic. Air movers help pull warm, dry air from above and directs the air across the entire surface of a floor. In our most recent commercial job, almost all of our air movers were put to use in the large commercial building. Working daily until the building was free of water and moisture.

Hoarding Scene Cleanup in Casselton?

8/23/2021 (Permalink)

A suburban home is shown. We provide hoarding cleanup services in Cass County.

My friend called and told me her mother’s health had declined, and she was in assisted living. I knew my friend had a tough time because her mother’s hoarding disorder made the house unsafe for her mother, but she wouldn’t let anyone in the house clean it and make it a safe place to live. The house looked fine from the outside, but inside the conditions were unsafe. You could barely walk through the house. Now that her mother was in assisted living permanently, the house in Casselton could be cleaned and decontaminated.

According to the American Psychiatry Association (AMA), people with hoarding disorder save items other people may view as worthless. They have persistent difficulty getting rid of things or parting with possessions which causes clutter that creates safety and health problems.

SERVPRO® of Fargo has years of experience cleaning and restoring hoarding scenes, and we will always treat you and your family with the empathy and respect you deserve. Storm Damage Prevention Tips for Mapleton?

Storm damage happens in Fargo.

Can you remember the last time you inspected your home’s exterior for areas that could allow water intrusion into the structure?  SERVPRO® of Fargo responds to storm damage emergencies each year and offer these tips from the Insurance Information Institute for protecting your home from storm damage:

Water can be prevented from entering a structure’s exterior through routine inspection and maintenance and making repairs as needed.

  • Caulk and seal windows
  • Inspect the roof for missing and aging shingles
  • Check rain gutters and drainage systems and remove any debris
  • Check downspouts and clear any clogs and make sure they are draining away from the structure
  • Check sprinkler systems and make sure the sprinklers are not spraying water onto the structure and that water is not pooling around the structure’s foundation
  • Make sure water drains away from the building.Water is invasive and will find its way into a structure easily when water is allowed to pool around the foundation. After a storm, or when the ground is already saturated by rainwater, the water may enter into the foundation wall through any cracks.

July is the peak season for outdoor grilling in the United States, and that means more accidental grilling fires. Propane Grills

If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off both the gas tank and the grill.

·      If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again

·      If the leak does not stop, call the fire department

Flood in Fargo?

SERVPRO® of Fargo responds to storm damage emergencies throughout the year in Fargo, and we know that our fast response helps to minimize further damage and higher repair bills. Here is some information about avoiding flood damage from The City of Fargo’s website:

·      Use the City’s Floodplain Map to examine your potential for flood risk.

·      Purchase flood insurance. Most homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover flooding. Allow thirty days for the policy to take effect.

·      Make sure your electric panel board is at least 12 inches above the projected flood elevation for your home

·      Make sure electric switches and outlets are located above potential floodwaters

·      Make sure your washer and dryer and furnace are above potential floodwaters

Make sure your fuel tank is anchored securely to the floor. If you have propane tanks that the propane company owns, you will need to write permission to anchor them.

·      Install a floating floor drain plug at the current drain location to prevent any future backup. When the floor drain pipe backs up, the gloat will rise and plug the drain.

·      Have a licensed plumber install an interior and exterior sewer system backflow valve

·      Major appliances should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet

·      Extension cords and plug strips should not be used

·      Ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCI’s) shut off an electrical circuit when it becomes a shock hazard. They should be installed inside the home in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and basements.

·      All outdoor receptacles should be GFCI protected

·      Test GFCI’s once a month according to manufacturer’s recommendations

Water hiding in the attic in Fargo?

I went into the attic to store some winter clothes and saw the pool of water. Water had been leaking onto the attic floor and seeping into the floor between the attic and the guest bedroom. When I inspected the guest bedroom, I saw a dark water stain blooming on the ceiling. I inspected the roof and found some shingles had blown off during the last storm, allowing water to get into the attic.

SERVPRO® of Fargo came out and assessed the damage, and immediately began the cleanup and restoration process. They repaired the roof damage and set up powerful air movers and dryers to remove the excess moisture. They documented the drying process and thoroughly cleaned, sanitized, and deodorized the attic and guest room, and repainted the guest room ceiling. Electrical Fire in Fargo?

5/17/2021 (Permalink)

An old breaker box is shown. We mitigate commercial fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Cass County.

Electrical Fire Fiasco

When one of my buildings in Downtown Fargo caught on fire, the Fargo Fire Department determined the fire was started due to some old, damaged electrical wiring. They were able to put the fire out quickly, but there was smoke, soot, and debris everywhere, and I wouldn’t be able to rent the building until the damage was repaired.

My insurance adjuster told me to call SERVPRO® of Fargo. I was amazed at how quickly and systematically they worked, going from room to room, cleaning soot and smoke damage from the walls, floors, and ceilings. They extracted the water left from the firefighting efforts and completely dried the area. They also supervised the electrical restoration and replaced the broken windows. The fire restoration technicians pretested everything before cleaning to ensure the items were salvageable.

At SERVPRO® of Fargo, we know that out fast, 24-hour response time helps our customers save money. The longer water from storm damage remains unmitigated, the higher the cost of the repair may be as water is invasive and will seep into any area it can. Even one day of water damage left untreated can lead to a more costly and time-consuming restoration.  Here is a water damage timeline from our website that describes the damage water can do in a short amount of time:

Within Minutes

  • Water quickly spreads throughout your property, saturating everything in its path
  • Water is absorbed into walls, floors, upholstery, and belongings
  • Furniture finishes may bleed, causing permanent staining on carpets
  • Photographs, books, and other paper goods start to swell and warp

Hours 1 - 24

  • Drywall begins to swell and break down
  • Metal surfaces begin to tarnish
  • Furniture begins to swell and crack
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper goods spread and stain
  • A musty odor appears

A shower is shown running. We mitigate water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Cass County.

Shower pan maintenance tips.

A recent study published by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS), noted that homes that were over twenty years old were 37 percent more likely to have water damage involving a shower, and more than half of the shower stall water damage incidents involved a faulty shower pan. SERVPRO® of Fargo has been responding to water damage emergencies for years in the Fargo area, and we know that the sooner water damage is mitigated, the lower the repair bill can be. Here are some loss prevention and maintenance tips from the IBHS to keep your shower in good condition:

Inspect the tile and grout every six months, paying close attention to loose or cracked tiles and cracked or crumbling grout lines, and test the shower pan annually, by:

·      Block the floor drain

·      Fill the shower stall with about one inch of water

·      Use a pencil to mark the waterline

·      Leave the water standing in the shower pan for eight hours

·      If the water level decreases, contact a plumbing professional

Mold Infestation in Briarwood?

4/26/2021 (Permalink)

Mold is shown growing above the baseboards of a home. We are trusted leaders in mold mitigation and remediation in the Fargo area.

Overnight Distress

Did you know that in the right conditions, mold can spread throughout your home or business in as little as forty-eight hours? SERVPRO® of Fargo has been providing mold mitigating and remediation services in Briarwood and the Fargo area for years. Here is some information from our website about mold and what causes it to grow.

About Mold

Microscopic mold spores exist naturally, almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, so removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and they may enter your home through windows, doors, or air conditioning and heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Let your nose lead the way. Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher than normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Commercial Water Restoration in West Fargo?

water is emerging from a wall and pooling on a tile floor. We are trusted leaders in water restoration in the Fargo area.

Waterworks in West Fargo

When I saw the water pooling on the floor in my medical clinic, I knew I had to act fast. The clinic would be opening in a few hours, and I was hopeful the problem could be fixed before I had to see patients. There was no way to tell where the water was coming from, but I suspected it was coming from somewhere inside the wall. I called SERVPRO® of Fargo and they quickly sent out a team of water restoration technicians.

The technicians used sensitive moisture detection equipment to identify the water’s location inside the wall and were able to repair the damaged pipe and clean the area quickly. They set up drying machines to remove the excess moisture from the air and documented the entire drying process. Because they responded so quickly, I avoided a more costly repair as there was no structural damage. Now it is difficult to see where the water damage was to begin with.

Water Heater Woes in West Fargo

At SERVPRO® of Fargo we respond to water damage emergencies in West Fargo often and some of these involve water heater failure. Water is invasive and will seep into and under anything it can when left standing and unmitigated for too long. In many cases water damage can be prevented, and the Institute for Business and Home Safety offers these water heater maintenance tips to protect your home from water damage:

  • Inspect your anode rod every two years, or every year once the warranty has expired, to determine if it needs to be replaced.
  • Flush water heater tanks every six months to remove sediment by attaching a garden hose to the valve at the base. For safety, first turn off the power and run hot water until it is cool.
  • Get an annual inspection from a plumbing professional, including the shut-off valve and all piping. Signs of broken valves and loose or wet joints and rust are a sign that more severe damage is coming.

Blackout in Fargo?

3/15/2021 (Permalink)

A flashlight is lit in a dark room. We mitigate storm damage 24-hours a day in Fargo.

SERVPRO® of Fargo responds to storm damage emergencies throughout the year in the Fargo area and we like to provide our readers with helpful information to keep you safe when faced with a storm emergency. On The City of Fargo website there is helpful information on what to do during a blackout:

During a Blackout

  • Only use a flashlight for emergency lighting-never use candles because they increase your risk of a house fire dramatically.
  • Most cordless phones won't work if the power goes out, so be sure to have a standard telephone in your home. Cellular phones may not operate properly during a blackout because cellular networks may lose power to the towers that transmit your call.
  • Turn off electrical equipment you were using when the power went out. Leave one light on so you'll know when power returns.
  • Avoid opening the refrigerator and freezer. Most medication that requires refrigeration can be kept in a closed refrigerator for several hours.
  • Don't run a generator inside a home or garage or connect it to a home’s electrical system. If you use a generator, connect the equipment you want to power directly to outlets on the generator.
  • Listen to a radio for the latest information.

A man is shown handling a fire extinguisher. We mitigate fire damage in the Fargo-Moorhead area 24-hours a day!

Every Minute Counts

Fire extinguishers are a great tool to have in a fire safety and escape plan for any home or business. SERVPRO® of Fargo has responded to many fire damage emergencies over the years, and in many cases, fire damage and injury were minimized through the use of a fire extinguisher, quick action, and having a good emergency escape plan in place. Here are some fire extinguisher safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):

NFPA Safety tips
  • Use a portable fire extinguisher when the fire is confined to a small area, such as a wastebasket, and is not growing; everyone has exited the building; the fire department has been called or is being called, and the room is not filled with smoke.
  • To operate a fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS:
    • Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you, and release the locking mechanism.
    • Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
    • Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
    • Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.

Ice Dam Control in Fargo?

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

A man removing snow from a snow-laden roof is shown. We respond to water emergencies in the Fargo-Moorhead area 24-hours a day!

Ice Dam Mitigation Tips

Ice dams occur when there are fluctuating temperatures on a roof allowing some areas to freeze, the “ice dam” and other areas to remain in a liquid state. The water that is backed up behind the ice dam causes water to seep underneath the roof shingles and exterior roof barriers and can cause water damage to the roof and attic spaces inside the structure. SERVPRO® of Fargo has been mitigating water damage in the Fargo-Moorhead area for years and know that many forms of water damage can be prevented, including ice dam damage. Here are some short-term, immediate tips from the University of Minnesota Extension (UMN) to help control ice dams:

  • Remove snow from the roof.
  • In an emergency situation where water is flowing into the house structure, making channels through the ice dam allows water behind the dam to drain off the roof.
    • Hosing with tap water on a warm day will do this job.
    • Work upward from the lower edge of the dam.
    • The channel is a temporary solution and will become ineffective within days.

Basement Water Seepage in Briarwood?

2/2/2021 (Permalink)

A clean and dry basement is shown. We are on call 24-hours a day in Fargo!

SERVPRO® of Fargo responds to water damage emergencies frequently throughout the year in Briarwood, and we see the damage even a small leak can do to a structure if left unmitigated for too long. Here are some prevention tips from the Insurance Information Institute to keep your basement dry:

Prevent basement water seepage

  • Reseal your basement. Water in the basement is often caused by cracks in building foundations or floor slabs. If you notice water seepage after heavy rain when you've never had a problem, it may mean that your once-waterproof cement floors and basement walls have deteriorated. Painting vulnerable areas with water sealant can prevent seepage.
  • Make sure water drains away from the building. Seepage is exacerbated by soil that has settled in a way to make water flow toward the building. After a storm, and especially if the ground is already saturated, rainwater that flows towards the building goes down the outside of the foundation wall potentially through any cracks.
  • Install a backwater valve. Though less common than other causes of basement water, sewer backups are messy. Learn more about your sewer responsibilities and install and maintain a backwater valve, which allows sewage to go out, but not come back in.

Frozen Pipe Damage in West Fargo?

1/25/2021 (Permalink)

A pipe is shown covered in ice. We are on call 24-hours a day in Fargo!

Freezing pipes in West Fargo?

Pipes can freeze when they run against exterior walls that have no insulation, or water supply lines are installed in unheated areas of a house. When frozen pipes burst, they cause water damage.  SERVPRO® of Fargo has a team of restoration technicians on call 24-hours a day to mitigate water damage, and we offer some tips from the American Red Cross on how to identify and thaw frozen pipes:

  • If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe.
  • Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the pipe.
  • Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hairdryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame devices.
  • Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you cannot thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.

Bathtub Leaking Through the Ceiling in Casselton?

1/5/2021 (Permalink)

A bathtub faucet is shown with water flowing into and filling the bathtub. Fargo residents trust us to restore water damage.

Bathtub water leaks happen

I live in an older home in the Casselton area. My home has always made lots of noises. The hardwood floors creak, and the pipes hum and knock sometimes. My living room has a dark painted ceiling, so I didn’t notice the water stain forming on the ceiling above my upstairs bathroom for some time. Evidently, a leak in the bathtub drain was causing the problem. This was an easy fix, but the subfloor underneath the bathtub was damaged, and so was the drywall on my ceiling.

Thankfully, SERVPRO® of Fargo came out and repaired the damaged area. They used an infrared camera to pinpoint the water damage and set up air movers and blowers to dry the area. Once the area was completely dry, they replaced the damaged subfloor and tile in my bathroom, repaired the drywall on my living room ceiling, and repainted. The repairs were completed very quickly, and now you would never know there ever was a leak!

We offer many restoration and reconstruction services in West Fargo. A room in a house is being put back together after it was damaged by fire.

When my home was damaged by fire, I had to deal with many vendors and repair people. It was very confusing, and it was difficult to oversee the repair work and work a full-time job. It’s good to know that SERVPRO® of Fargo provides a wide range of restoration services and will oversee construction and rebuilding repairs through to completion, so only one person is managing the entire job from start to finish! They can supervise these reconstruction services:

Commercial lighting equipment safety information for Fargo

11/3/2020 (Permalink)

large overhead commercial light Office lighting is the second most common cause of commercial fires – stay safe in Fargo.

According to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), one of the most common causes of commercial fires is electrical and lighting equipment. This type of fire is not easily predicted, as the lighting equipment can look totally fine on the outside in your Fargo business. SERVPRO® of Fargo wants to share the following information about commercial fires and how safety equipment helps to lessen the damage and can assist in preventing any bodily injury:

  • Wet pipe sprinklers installed in the ceilings of commercial buildings are very effective in helping to fight the fire(s)
  • Building sprinklers should be examined and tested every 5 years
  • There should always be a fire extinguisher in reach inside of a commercial building and they must be checked annually to ensure they are in working order
  •  If an office building is on fire, exit the building immediately and do not try to fight the fire yourself
  • If there is a lot of smoke inside the building, cover your mouth and nose and do your best to not inhale any of it

In the unfortunate event that a commercial building does catch fire, rest assured that SERVPRO of Fargo is prepared to help clean up any fire damage the building/area has sustained.

Properly Installed Smoke Detectors in Fargo

10/29/2020 (Permalink)

smoke alarm with smoke wisps Smoke detectors can alert you to a fire in your home, saving lives in Fargo.

There is no structure in Fargo that cannot be made safer with properly installed smoke detectors. These devices, when used as instructed, can save lives and property. SERVPRO of Fargo knows the safety of your family is your number one concern. It is ours as well.

Did you know:

  • Properties without working smoke alarms has an increase in home fire deaths
  • Around one-third of home fires begin in homes which do not have smoke alarms
  • The chances of someone dying in a home fire is cut in half when smoke alarms are present

SERVPRO of Fargo would like to share these suggestions:

  • We recommend that your home be equipped with smoke detectors outside and inside each sleeping area
  • Place a smoke detector on all levels of the structure (bigger homes require more detectors).
  • Closing doors will inhibit the movement of heat, smoke, and fire.
  • Test your smoke alarms at least every thirty days. Testing is done by pressing the test button to ensure each alarm is working.

Most professionals agree that your alarms should be interconnected so that, no matter where the smoke is detected, everyone in the house is alerted simultaneously.  When the alarms sound, immediately vacate the structure in Fargo and position you and your loved ones away from it until help arrives.

Advanced Technology in Prosper?

10/27/2020 (Permalink)

A technician is shown using a hygrometer to measure moisture saturation. We use advanced technology when restoring fire and water damage in Fargo!

Hygrometer Fun Facts

Did you know that SERVPRO® of Fargo uses advanced technology to restore damaged properties to preloss condition more reliably, effectively, and quickly in Prosper? For example, our water damage restoration technicians use scientific drying principles and state-of-the-art moisture detection equipment to detect, measure and monitor a property’s moisture levels. Hygrometers are used to measure the extent of moisture saturation in the damaged area.

According to the author, Richard Hamblyn, the ancient Chinese constructed a prototype hygrometer in the Shang Dynasty (c.1600-1046 BCE), to study weather. Using a bar of charcoal and a clump of earth, the dry weight was recorded and then compared to the damp weight after being exposed to the air. They then measured the differences in weight to determine the humidity level.

SERVPRO technicians follow the guidelines and best practices set forth by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), and are required to undergo initial rigorous and ongoing training to stay up-to-speed with technological advancements in the restoration industry.

SERVPRO of Fargo relies on science when helping Harwood

10/19/2020 (Permalink)

The Norse God, Thor, is shown wielding his hammer during a lightning strike. Fargo residents don’t blame mythological gods for storms!

Storm Damage

Lightning, high winds, and heavy rain can all cause storm damage in Harwood homes and commercial or community buildings. SERVPRO® of Fargo is an expert in restoration from storms, floods, and other kinds of damage.

No matter how frightening a particular storm might be, we’re storm damage restoration specialists, and that science can explain the causes.

Storm Mythology

The mythology is scary. The gods were impulsive and often bratty.  If there were a “most wanted” list for storm creation, these beings would be on it.

Tawhiri

The Maori god of wind and storms made a major fuss when his brothers won an argument against him. Modern-day sibling rivalry has nothing on the destruction he caused. At SERVPRO of Fargo, we hope that Tawhiri was a calmer dad than he was a brother. Tawhiri had 13 cloud children; some were dark and stormy, and the others were light and fluffy. He had 3 other offspring: Rain, Mist, and Fog.

Thor

Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir (Old Norse for “Destroyer”) created thunder whenever he threw it at someone who annoyed him. Everyone at SERVPRO of Fargo likes best how Mjolnir returned to Thor’s fist after he threw it. Imagine applying that magic to car keys and sunglasses.

Mold Spores can Survive Harsh Conditions in your Fargo Home or Business

10/14/2020 (Permalink)

gloved hand cleaning mold and microbial growth SERVPRO of Fargo is Here To Help when mold and microbial damage occurs.

Mold grows out of tiny spores. Spores are tough enough to survive indoors or outdoors in harsh
conditions. Spores can survive for years. Scientists have found ancient mold spores that could
grow into mold.
Standing water and moisture can lead to mold growing in your home. Mold does not need visible
water to grow. Humidity inside the home is enough. Small amounts of water vapor can help
mold grow.
SERVPRO of Fargo knows that storm or flood damage can allow the mold spores to open
up. Any dampness can lead to mold.
SERVPRO of Fargo can remediate mold that grows on:

  • Wood
  • Paper
  • Carpet
  • Insulation
  • Drywall
  • Crawl spaces
  • Attics
  • Basements
  • Bathrooms
  • Anywhere in your home or business

To treat mold correctly, it is critically important to first stop the source of moisture. SERVPRO
of Fargo can clean and repair the damage caused by mold in your home or business. More
important, SERVPRO of Fargo has a specialty in mold remediation.

10/8/2020 (Permalink)

Woman with pan on fire in kitchen SERVPRO of Fargo is ready to respond when fire damage strikes.

SERVPRO of Fargo understands that cooking equipment is a leading cause of fire damage
and fire injuries in your Fargo home.
To help prevent fire damage, SERVPRO of Fargo shares these tips. They make more sense
than not cooking at home.

  • Many kitchen items can catch fire, including dishtowels, oven mitts, recipes, wooden
    tools, and loose clothing
  • Never operate the stove or oven when you are tired or have been drinking alcohol
  • If you are frying, broiling, grilling, or boiling food, stay in the kitchen. If you leave, even
for a short time, turn off the heat
  • Keep flammable items at least three feet from the stovetop
  •  Do not allow children within two to four feet of the stove or oven
  • If you must leave the house while cooking of any kind, turn off the heat sources

Remember that fire is fast. If you cannot contain a fire immediately, leave and bring everyone
with you. Call 9-1-1 from outside your City or County home.

SERVPRO of Fargo reminds you that fire prevention is the best strategy against fire
damage.

Staying Healthy Around Standing Water in Fargo:

Standing water of any kind in Fargo can be a powerful source of disease. Floods can be worse due to the amount of water involved. Even small puddles can pose a risk.

Different kinds of debris can be found in floodwaters such as dead animals, rotted plants, and sewage, to name a few. If you have water damage inside your home, watch for debris in the home as well to include rotted food and electrical problems.

Viruses and bacteria can cause illnesses. To reduce your chances of catching something, SERVPRO of Fargo suggests:

  • Washing dirty clothes and towels in hot water. Use bleach if possible
  • Remember that you can shake hands with an infected person and get infected.
  • Do not allow children to play in the flood water
  • Wash children’s hands before meals
  • Disinfect toys before letting children play with them
  • Use bleach or other disinfectants on hard surfaces
  • Keep your hands washed

Cuts and rashes can become infected. Protect yourself and others in Fargo:

  • Avoid floodwaters if you have an open rash or a cut
  • Clean cuts or rashes. Cover them with a waterproof bandage
  • Clean cuts with soap and clean water
  • If a cut becomes red, swollen, or is oozing, get medical attention

Thunderstorm preparedness in Fargo

9/14/2020 (Permalink)

Lighting striking through the sky Although you cannot prevent thunderstorms, you can prepare for them.

Thunderstorms are beautiful, but they can also be dangerous.  They can cause severe damage to your home and property in Fargo. Thunderstorms include lightning and can:

  • Include winds over 50 MPH
  • Create hail
  • Cause flash floods
  • Cause tornadoes

In most places, a thunderstorm can happen at any time of the year, and at any time of the day.

SERVPRO® of Fargo knows you cannot prevent a thunderstorm, but you can prepare:

  • Know the risk for thunderstorms in Fargo
  • Sign up for your community’s warning system
  • Cut down or trim trees that may fall on your home or office
  • Install surge protectors, lightning rods, or a lightning protection system

SERVPRO of Fargo repeats the warning, “When thunder roars, go indoors”.  You don’t have to wait for the thunder. If there is a thunderstorm warning, go inside. Once there:

  • Unplug appliances
  • Do not use landline phones in office or home
  • Pay attention to alerts and warnings

If you can’t get inside a building:

  • If you are swimming or in a boat, get to land immediately.  Find shelter
  • If you are in a car, don’t touch anything metal
  • “Turn around. Don’t Drown. '' Avoid flooded roads. 6 inches of moving water can knock you down. One foot of moving water can sweep away your car.

A lightning strike during a thunderstorm can leave a wake of destruction in its path. This can range from minor electrical issues to fire damage. Lightning is also a major cause of injury or death from weather-related dangers.  Most people survive being hit by lightning, but they often have long-term problems.
